The Red Book is Carl Gustav Jung’s most intimate work. The author explains that he wrote this book in order to find his soul and that he had to descend deep within himself to find it. The red zig zag line is a direct reference to the thread that keeps him form losing himself in his quest for his soul. An avid reader of alchemical texts, Jung was also an enthusiast of William Blake’s poetry and engravings. Between the red lines in the composition is an excerpt from Blake’s Four Zoas poem, which aptly resonates with Jung’s quest: “Thus were the stars of heaven created like a golden chain. To bind the Body of Man to heaven from falling into the Abyss. Each took his station, and his course began with sorrow and care”.
