Retranscription of Le Banquet

2014

0.05 ink pen on paper and Le Banquet by Plato (French) (50.8cm x 33.02cm)

When the time comes for Socrates to speak, he recounts a discussion he had with a woman, Diotima. Plato places at the center of The Banquet a woman. It was she who taught Socrates about the god Eros and the concept of love. The empty lines in the retranscription mark the moment when Diotima speaks, though shining by her absence. The woman and the slave being virtually synonymous in ancient Greece, Plato is for me a forward thinker.
